3 workers die in BEL Tower accident

Three construction workers died after falling from a makeshift ladder from a 15th of the BEL Tower, the corporate headquarters of Beximco Group on road 1 in Dhanmandi area this morning.

The binding wires snapped and the hanging scaffold holding them fell below on the rooftop of a neighbouring building at midday, New Market police chief AM Kamrul Islam told reporter. The three workers standing on a hanging platform outside the BEL Tower on the western face fell on the roof of a five-storey building when the hoisting mechanism holding the platform failed accidentally.

The dead were identified as M Mintu, 40, Shahin, 24, and Ali Ahmed, 25. All the three men died as their heads smashed and limbs were badly mauled, the police officer said. Shaheen Reza, a Beximco official said, the police were informed as soon as the accident occurred and the dead were not taken to the hospital as they died on the spot.
