HC says yes to Proshika new governing body

The High Court (HC) in a verdict today recognised the present governing body of Proshika, one of the largest NGOs of the country, as the authority of the organisation.

The court also directed all concerned of Proshika to maintain status quo in running the organisation that means the NGO will run as usual under its present governing body. On May 24, this year the present governing body replaced its chairman Qazi Faruque Ahmed with advocate Abdul Wadud in the face of an ongoing employees' agitation against Faruque. After nearly two months, on August 1, Qazi Faruque Ahmed along with his hired men attacked the Proshika's head office in Mirpur in the capital, leaving at least 20 of its employees injured. He also tried to enter the office on the day.

The HC in the judgment ruled that Qazi Faruque Ahmed alone, not as a group, will be allowed in the Proshika office as its former chairman, but he would not take any decision for the office or hold any meeting or procession on office premises. It also asked Faruque and Proshika authorities to take steps to dispose of the case filed regarding selecting the authority of the organisation pending with the lower court within four months. The HC bench of Justice Md Abdus Salam came up with the directives upon a petition filed by Faruque.

Faruque filed a case with the first assistant judge's court on May 27, this year challenging the decision but the court rejected the petition on May 31. Faruque filed an appeal with the district judge's court on June 1, which was also rejected on June 6. He then filed a civil revision case with the High Court. After holding a long hearing on the revision petition, the HC bench today delivered the verdict. Central coordinator of Proshika, Shyamal Dey expressed satisfaction with the HC verdict. He told that Qazi Faruque Ahmed was removed from Proshika due to his unbridled corruption and nepotism.
