UK MP demands int'l enquiry into Tipai dam

George Galloway, a member of parliament in London, on Wednesday demanded international enquiry into the proposed Tipaimukh dam by India. "If the dam is built Bangladesh, particularly, its Sylhet area will be seriously damaged and this project should be halted," he said. He said such dam would seriously affect the environment and climate of Bangladesh.

A vast area of Bangladesh will be deserted in dry season and many areas will be flooded in rainy season once the dam is constructed, he added. Galloway made the remark at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium in the afternoon. He said he represented 40,000 people of Sylhet living in London and it was his duty to see the advantages and disadvantages of those people who might fall victim to the proposed dam. He said his party, Respect Party UK, staged demonstration before the Indian High Commission office last month against the dam. He has been carrying out a campaign against the dam all over the world and building awareness about the impact of the proposed dam.
