A parliamentary body today came down heavily on Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) for its failure to provide pure and safe drinking water to city dwellers and dispose sewer properly by strengthening its network.
The parliamentary standing committee on LGRD ministry observed that the Wasa could not address people’s sufferings in many parts of the city due to acute drinking water crisis and bad sewerage system. The Wasa placed a report on its activities before the parliamentary body for discussion, claiming that it continues working to serve city dwellers.
But the committee rejected their claims saying the Wasa contributed very little to reduce people’s sufferings, officials attended the meeting said. It also asked the Wasa to come up with a detail report at next meeting and if necessary the members of the committee will make field level visit.
Established in 163, the Dhaka Wasa, an autonomous body under the LGRD ministry, has the responsibility of providing pure and safe drinking water to city dwellers on a regular and continuous basis and disposing sewer regularly. But in the recent years, it performed so badly that caused enormous suffering to people in various parts of the city.
