Awami League general secretary Abdul Jalil yesterday expressed the view that the caretaker system of government has lost credibility.

Sharing the view of the Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury for abolition of the caretaker system of administration, he said a consensus among all the political parties is needed for abolition of caretaker system of government.

Abdul Jalil termed the dispatch of letters by BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on Tipaimukh dam an eye wash to mislead the people. Turning to the Tipaimukh Dam issue, Abdul Jalil, also former commerce minister, said the issue must be resolved through bilateral talks between the two countries. Terming the dispatch of letters by BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia as an eyewash, he said they are opposing it for the sake of opposition and dispatching letters as an eyewash to mislead the people.

Abdul Jalil said, if the opposition wants a solution of the matter in the real sense of the term then they should join hands with the government. They should extend cooperation to the government and work together for the sake of the country. He hoped that the opposition would extend its hands of cooperation towards the government and the government would resolve the issue through talks with India.

Awami League general secretary said, It is right that the caretaker government has lost its credibility. But, a consensus among all the political parties is needed for abolition of the caretaker system. "If we take suo motto decision to participate in the election in that case the election would not get credibility, he added.

Abdul Jalil said, We want assumption of office by a political government through a free, fair and neutral election. We also want election under the parliamentary democratic system. I believe, there is a need for abolition of the caretaker system of government. But, it needs consensus among all the political parties.

In the afternoon, Abdul Jalil visited Taufique Uddin, senior Staff Reporter of daily Manabjamin, who has been undergoing treatment at the city's Somrita Hospital with seriously illness. The AL general secretary stayed beside the bed of the ailing reporter for sometime and handed him Taka 50,000 as his medical treatment assistance.

Abdul Jalil will leave Dhaka for Singapore tonight for his routine medical check-up. He will avail a flight of Singapore Airlines at 11-30 tonight and get admitted at Mount Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. After his release from jail, he underwent treatment at this hospital for long. Abdul Jalil will return home on July 9.
