JCD dissolves DU, 2 city units

The just-formed central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Monday night dissolved the organisation’s three units and expelled four leaders for ‘breach of discipline and anti-organisational activities.’

The Chhatra Dal president, Sultan Salauddin Tuku, told New Age that the central committee has dissolved the Dhaka University, Dhaka city south and Dhaka city north units of the organisation and expelled four leaders of the Dhaka University unit.

The expelled are general secretary of Dhaka University unit Saiful Islam Firoz, its vice president Mamunur Rashid Mamun, and joint secretaries Akramuzzman Hasan and Sadiul Kabir Nirab, Tuku said. It was the first organisational step since the new committee of the main opposition’s associate body of students took over less than a week ago.

Leaders and activists of the three dissolved committees led the demonstration against the new central committee. The expelled leaders were initiators of the agitation, according to JCD sources.

The BNP’s chairperson, Khaleda Zia, shortly before midnight of July 1 approved a five-member central committee with Sultan Salauddin Tuku and Amirul Islam Khan Alim as president and general secretary respectively, and asked them to form a full committee in the next 10 days. The tenure of the new committee will last until January 2010.
