Dhaka, Sunday, July 12, 2009 - 9:12pm Former army chief Moeen U Ahmed has been sued by BNP's former state minister for power Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku, who is claiming Tk 100 crore in damages for defamation. BNP leader barrister Moudud Ahmed filed the case today with the Third Joint District Judge's Court, Dhaka on behalf of the plaintiff.
Upon a petition filed by Tuku, the court this afternoon asked the former army chief to explain within three weeks why his property would not be attached. Earlier on March 27, 2007, Moeen said corrupt politicians smuggled their money overseas, including at least Tk 20,000 crore smuggled off shore from the energy sector alone. Moeen made the remarks at a tea party he hosted at the National Parade Square in honour of the Freedom Fighters.
Moudud in the case statement said the news was published on the following day in different national dailies, which has hurt Tuku and tarnished his image in the society as well as political arena. On behalf of the government, incumbent energy secretary has been made pro forma dependent in the suit.
After hearing the petition, Judge SM Saiful Islam of the Third Joint District Judge's Court passed the order. Earlier in the day, Tuku filed the petition seeking temporary injunction and advanced attachment order of Moeen's property situated at house no 106, northern road Baridhara DOHS in Dhaka.
Moeen, who was appointed to the post of the army chief on July 15, 2005, went into retirement on completion of his tenure of service on June 15 this year. Moeen's job tenure was scheduled to expire on June 15, 2008, but in April 2008, the then President Iajuddin Ahmed extended his job for one year. The former army chief left Dhaka for Singapore on June 29.
Moeen was one of the key architects of the 1/11 political changeover during the last caretaker government regime. He took a leading role in backing the interim government that lasted for two years and culminated with the general elections on December 29, 2008.
Tuku, wife Rumana Mahmud and their two children were sent to jail on graft charges during that period. Convicted in a corruption case and facing a 10-year sentence, Tuku has since secured bail from the High Court, but could not run in the general election last year because of his conviction. Instead, Rumana won the Sirajganj-2 seat in the December polls and is now a BNP MP.

Tuku, Tareq's close operative of Hawa Bhaban committed multiway crime against the nation by stealing & completely crippling the energy sector. During last BNP, everybody tried to loot anything possible. Some of the looting hurt the nation very badly, energy sector is one of them.
He hurt industrialization, job creation by crippling electric sector, every year new 10 lakhs people are added to the work force. His sons and daughter had crores of Takas in their accounts, while they were students.
The new building developers in Dhaka poured tonns of illegal money for connections, he simply deprived the industries by not increaing power generation but getting involved with real estate developers.
The criminal got caught, prosecuted, jailed. Unfortunately, he came out like Alamgir, Moudud gong; now trying to bite back.
