Ex-NBR director Zahurul, wife sent to jail

A Dhaka court today sent former National Board of Revenue (NBR) director Zahurul Haque and his wife Afia Haque to jail on surrender in a corruption case in which they were earlier sentenced to jail on different terms.

Metropolitan special judge Mozammel Hossain turned down their appeal for bail on Tuesday after the couple turned themselves in to the court at around 11:30am.

The court earlier had sentenced Zahurul to 13 years in jail on twin charges of accumulating illegal wealth and suppressing the information to the Anticorruption Commission and his wife to three years in jail for abetting her husband.

He was on the list of the top 50 corrupt politicians and other top professionals made by the graft watchdog during the 2007-2008 caretaker government.
