Police arrested retired major Joynal Abedin, a freedom fighter and the chairman of a religion-based NGO called Islami Ummah, at Nirala residential area in Khulna city early today.

Joynal had acted as a commander for sector 9 during the liberation war in absence of Major (retd) MA Jalil. Sadar police said Joynal was arrested around 6:00am in a case filed with Trishal Police Station in Mymensingh in February 1990. Sadar police chief Munirul Gias said the Islami Ummah chief was wanted in an arms case.

Gias said Joynal still heads the NGO that withdrew its activities in 1992 from Khulna following a lot of allegations of misappropriation of fund and religion-based politics under cover of voluntary services.
