Law Ministry under fire: JS body to probe PPs appointment

Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs yesterday decided to examine the allegation that the Public Prosecutors (PPs) are being employed considering their political identity.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee held at Sangsad Bhaban with its Chairman Suranjit Sengupta in the chair. "The committee has already sought lists of the PPs from the Ministry of Law to this end" said the Chairman. He said the matter should be looked into as there was allegation of politicisation in employing PPs before and the same allegation has been raised during the present government.

Suranjit Sengupta said the committee will see how the appointments were given and whether the recommendations of Deputy Commissioners were taken in this regard. He said the committee also decided to visit some districts to examine the appointment process of PPs.

The Chairman said that the committee had been informed that some PPs had taken salaries without attending the courts; someone even earned crore of Taka utilizing the appointments. He said the committee would also examine whether there was any loopholes in giving clemency to Chhatra Dal leader Mohiudidn Jhintu by the President in 2005 in a murder case.
