The BNP has strongly criticised the government for what the party leaders said “indecent behaviour” with Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia, as her official car was allegedly barred from moving towards her cantonment residence.
Addressing a press briefing at the media centre in parliament today on the recent steps of the government centering Khaleda Zia, Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque said the government was not leaving any option for the BNP other than a movement.
He alleged the Awami League was running the country and the parliament in their trodden path of one-party BAKSAL system.
After the press briefing, a team of BNP lawmakers led by the opposition chief whip, met Speaker Abdul Hamid to inform him about the problems the opposition leader was facing. According to them, the speaker assured them that he would talk to the government.
Zainul Abdin cited issues like disallowing the opposition leader’s car into her cantonment residence since Sunday night, not allowing parliament’s everyday agenda in order of the day and the withdrawal of police force from Khaleda’s Gulshan office.
The opposition chief whip came down hard on the state-run Bangladesh Television for airing documentary styled ‘Firey Dekha’ Monday night where “unilateral objectionable statements were being propagated” regarding the cantonment residence of Zia family.
“Doing so is not only dishonor to the opposition leader but also like contempt of the higher court,” he said.
The lawmaker pointed out that the High Court issued rule nisi staying operation of the notice on cancellation of lease and asking Khaleda to vacate the cantonment residence.
