Dhaka court today acquitted Awami Swechchhasebok League President AFM Bahauddin Nasim of charges in a sedition case filed in March 2002.
Judge Ismail Hossain of the 4th Additional Metropolitan Session Judge's Court passed the order in presence of Nasim at a packed courtroom. The court said Nasim was cleared of charges since the allegations against him were not proved.
Police filed the case with a Dhaka court on March 11 in 2002, accusing Nasim of acting against the country's sovereignty and tarnishing its image abroad.
Mohammad Dulal Uddin Akond, ASP of the Criminal Investigation Department, Faridpur zone, Dhaka, arrested Bahauddin Nasim on February 27 in 2002 at Zia International Airport (ZIA) and seized $ 6,300, three passports, two tickets, eight books and some CDs.
The complainant of the case, filed with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka, alleged that the CDs recovered from Nasim on his way to the USA contained 'false and fabricated scenes of torture' on the minority community.
The CDs contained torture of Purnima in Sirajganj, attacks on minority Hindu community and ransacking of puja mandaps. After hearing, the court had directed the officer in-charge (OC) of Airport Police Station to accept the complaint as a regular case and to go for legal action against the accused. Following the court order, police registered the case.
