CG system should not be repealed, can be modified, says Moudud

BNP standing committee member and former law minister Barrister Moudud Ahmed MP has said that the caretaker government system, if necessary, can be modified but it should not be repealed.

He said this while talking to journalists at his Dilkusha chamber yesterday afternoon. "The government has brought the issue of caretaker government to hide its failure to resolve some important issues like crime, politicisation and law and order," he added.

The day before yesterday deputy leader of the ruling party in the parliament Sajeda Chowdhury called upon the members of the parliament (MPs) to raise their voice against the caretaker government system. The BNP policy maker alleged that the Awami League-led government has completely politicised all the sectors of the government including the administration.

So the Election Commission alone cannot hold a free, fair, transparent and acceptable election as the EC is to depend on the local administration for completing electoral activities, he added.

"The role of the incumbent EC during the caretaker government was not beyond question. The EC made effort to divide the main opposition BNP by inviting the so-called reformist BNP leaders for discussion with it about the Representation of Peoples Order (RPO). So in the present situation the Election Commission cannot be the alternative of the caretaker government," Barrister Moudud said.

The caretaker government system was the brainchild of the incumbent Prime Minister and so it is not 'a usual event' that her government is demanding annulment of her innovation. They (the government) must have a remote intention behind their demanding the nullification of the caretaker government system, he added.

Replying to a query about a comment of a ruling party MP, Moudud said the opposition MPs must not resign and they will attend the Parliament since the people have elected them to represent them.

At this moment the problem of seat arrangement is not the only reason for the opposition MPs' remaining out of Parliament. The government has compelled the opposition not to attend parliament, he added.

"The government is trying to oust the opposition leader from her house. They (the government) intentionally have created problem with opposition leader's security. Even the leader of the Opposition is not being provided the daily work notice of Parliament," the BNP senior leader said.
