An alleged criminal was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and Rab at the capital’s Kamrangirchar area early today.
Two members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) were also injured in the shootout.
The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain Dilu alias Delwar Hossain Dilu, 35, a notorious criminal of Lalbagh area. He was wanted in seven criminal cases, sources said.
Rab-10 members received secret information that a gang of criminals assembled at a place in Kamrangirchar for committing crimes.
The elite force sent a special detective team to the spot and informed the regular patrol team commander of Kamrangirchar about the matter.
The criminals opened fire on a Rab team after it arrived at the spot at about 3:15am, said a Rab press release.
Being attacked by the criminals, the elite force gave their identity asking them to halt firing. As they ignored the directive, Rab members were forced to return the fire. Later, the criminals fled the scene after 20-25 minutes of gunfight.
Later, police with the help of local people recovered the body of Dilu from the spot.
Two revolvers, eight rounds of revolver bullet and four cartridges were recovered from the spot.
Two Rab members Corporal Joy Gopal Das and Lance Nayek Nasir Uddin were injured in the gunfight.
Local people took out a jubilant procession and entertained each other with sweets after receiving the death news of notorious criminal Dilu.
