Prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina congratulated India’s Congress president Sonia Gandhi on her party’s thumping victory in the Indian Lok Sabha elections.

In a felicitation message sent to Sonia as the results of the staggered polls were announced on Saturday, the prime minister said, ‘The faith reposed on Congress through this election is a reflection of people’s aspiration for democracy, peace and bringing about a change in their destiny.’

Hasina, who also has led her party and allies to a landslide victory at the recent polls, hoped the existing friendly relations between the peoples of the two countries would further deepen in the future.

According to PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad, she said her government would closely work with the new government in India for consolidating democracy, establishing peace, removing poverty and ensuring development in the region.
