Jail killing case to be retried: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said the re-trial of four national leaders' murder case would be held as soon as possible. While addressing a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Center Sheikh Hasina told her party men, "We have to be united as the culprits are still hatching conspiracy." The ruling Awami League organized the discussion to observe the jail killing day.

UNB adds: Wreaths were placed and milad mahfil was held at cell no. 1 in Dhaka Central Jail Tuesday morning commemorating the killing of four national leaders. Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, AHM Qamruzzaman and Capt Mansur Ali were brutally killed at the cell on this day in 1975 after the dastardly assassination of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most members of his family on August 15, 1975.

Home Minister Sahara Khatun, State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, State Minister for Law Advocate Qamrul islam and local MP Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin placed the wreaths and joined the milad mahfil at about 11:30am. They also placed wreaths at a ‘Kamini’ tree planted by Bangabandhu during his prison life. Talking to reporters inside the jail, State Minister for Law Advocate Qamrul Islam said after the completion of the Bangabandhu murder case, the government will seek hearing on leave to appeal in the four national leaders’ killing case. He said trial court earlier gave death sentence to three accused and life imprisonment to six others, but the High Court upheld death sentence of one accused. Qamrul said the past 4-party alliance government had “tried to divert the case.”

Home Minister Sahara Khatun said construction work has already started on the Commemorative Structure representing 6-point demand inside Dhaka Central Jail. Alongside the structure, a memorial will also be built to commemorate the killing of the four national leaders beside their cell. She said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to inaugurate the Commemorative Structure and the Memorial on December 16 to keep alive the memories of Bangabandhu and his four close associates.

State Minister Shamsul Haque Tuku said the government will ensure the security of inmates of Dhaka Central Jail. Accused may be punished after trial but their security in jail must be ensured. Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi Road no 32. Awami League senior leaders were present. Sheikh Hasina also visited the Banani graveyard to pay tributes to the victims of August 15, 1975 massacre and November 3 jail killing.
