Mahmud, Sharfuddin elected BMA president, SG unofficially

Dr Mahmud Hasan and Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed were unofficially elected president and secretary general of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA). Talking to The Daily Star, Chief Election Commissioner of the BMA Dr AS Mashiur Rahman said they likely to declare the official result this evening.

Ruling party-backed Mahmud-Sharfuddin panel of Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad (SCP) won the election almost unopposed as three other panels, including the main opposition BNP-backed panel of Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (DAB), boycotted the election, expressing doubts about the credibility of the election process.

The election to the BMA was held across the country on Thursday, with participation of only the Mahmud-Sharfuddin panel. The turnout of voters was also low across the country. Dr Mashiur said 40 percent of the total 10,100 votes were cast in Dhaka district. SCP claimed that voter turnout across the country was 70 percent.
