Don't try to foil council, Abbas to govt

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) joint secretary general Mirza Abbas yesterday urged the government not to hatch any conspiracy to spoil the party national council.
"If you (government) can't cooperate with us, it doesn't matter but please don't make any plot to ruin our national council scheduled to be held on December 8," he said while talking to the newsmen at the party central office at Naya Paltan in the city.

He said, most of the people termed the Awami League (AL) council a cosmetic one. But we want to make it clear before the nation that unlike them (AL), we are going to organise a fruitful and well-organised council, said Mirza Abbas. He alleged that the government was trying to prevent the BNP from holding the national council. "The Awami League armed cadres with the help of the government are now unleashing terror attacks across the country when our leaders and workers want to hold meetings.

They are setting ablaze our party offices and the houses of BNP leaders and workers in a bid to foil the party's different level councils," said Mirza Abbas adding "Panic had started griping the ruling Awami League as the BNP has been completing the councils of different tiers one by one throughout the country." He also severely condemned the Sunday's attack on BNP industrial affairs secretary and former MP Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury by 'the Awami League miscreants' in Chittagong.

BNP joint secretary general Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said that the attempt to eliminate the political parties which started during the caretaker government was yet to end. Slating the politicisation of administration he said, the police administration doesn't belong to a particular party but it belongs to the whole country. He warned that BNP would not hesitate to take any action against the government to protect the independence and sovereignty of the country. Among others, BNP office secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed and industrial affairs secretary Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury were present.
