KMC closed after BCL clash

Khulna Medical College was closed for indefinite period on Monday as a sequence of sporadic clashes between two factional units of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. The medical college academic council took the decision at an emergency meeting around 4:00pm and also asked the students to vacate its two halls--one for male and another for female--by 6:00 in this evening.

The unruly students of the ruling Awami League's student front BCL meanwhile confined KP Sarkar, principal of the medical college, at his office around 5:00pm demanding cancellation of the academic council's decision to close the medical college. The BCL groups locked in the clashes on the college campus around 3:00pm centring a cultural function where chase and counter-chase took place, our Khulna correspondent reports.

They also hurled brick chips on each other during the clashes. Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Helaluddin Badri told The Daily Star that they deployed additional police around the principal's office. A discussion has been going on among students, teachers and police over cancellation of the council's decision till filing of the report around 7:30pm.
