A Dhaka court yesterday sent Farukh Aziz, Superintending Engineer of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), to jail in connection with a case filed against him on charge of threatening his chief engineer by brandishing firearms. After producing him before the court yesterday afternoon, the judge SK Tofail Hassan of the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka passed the order.
The court also asked the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, Ataur Rahman Sub-Inspector of Shahbagh Police Station, to explain within a day as to why he (IO) filed the case under bailable sections (143, 323 and 506) despite of serious offences brought against him. Faruk filed a petition to the court seeking bail that the court fixed October 1 for hearing the petition.
Emerging from the court the petitioners counsel Advocate Ahsanul Haque Samaji told the reporters that the court should give him bail as the case was filed against him under the bailable sections. "The Court cannot issue show cause notice against IO of the case at this stage. The court can only grant him bail at this stage of the case," he added.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Tuesday night arrested him (Faruk) from Sheikhertek Mohammadpur area following a general diary on charge of threatening his chief engineer. The RAB personnel also seized his licensed pistol and 25 rounds of bullet from the house. A group of officials led by Farukh on Sunday last, threatened DCC Chief Engineer Brig General Md Abdul Kadir showing off a pistol during a negotiation on promotion.
DCC Chief Engineer in a written complaint to the city Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka earlier alleged that Superintending Engineer Faruk Aziz along with a group of people stormed into his office at around 11.20 am and threatened to kill him brandishing small arms. After receiving a complaint from the chief engineer, DCC Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka suspended him.
