A five-member parliamentary delegation of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad returned home on Wednesday from Tanzania after attending the 55th conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association(CPA).

Parliament member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim led the team which included Dr Oli Ahmed, Bir Bikram, MP, HN Ashikur Rahman, MP, Nawab Ali Abbas Khan, MP, and Joint Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat Syed Ahammad, a press release said here yesterday. The delegation joined a number of workshops, including the inaugural function, and highlighted Bangladesh's position on various issues including the impact of the climate change. Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete opened the conference on October 2. A total of 850 lawmakers, observers and high officials of the Commonwealth countries took part in the conference held in the Tanzanian tourist city of Arusha.

The Bangladesh delegation attended the workshop on 'Climate Change: Effectiveness of Remedial Policy' on October 4. Leader of the team Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim highlighted the adverse impact of nature in Bangladesh due to climate change, saying that the developed countries are mainly responsible for global warming. "Bangladesh is one of the worst victims of climate change though its role in this regard is very insignificant," he said.

Sheikh Selim said the extent of natural disasters like flood, cyclone, tsunami is being increased manifold in Bangladesh due to global warming. "The country will have to shift its two crore people by 2050 if the worldwide environment pollution is not checked," he mentioned. He sought financial as well as technical assistance from the international community to solve the problems created due to climate change.
