The police allegedly refused to record a case in connection with the encroachment of four shipbreaking yards by the sons of ruling Awami League lawmaker ABM Abul Kashem at Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong. Abdur Razzak, owner of the Moslema Steel, said his company manager Mohammed Amin approached the Sitakunda police station Thursday night to file a case against the sons of the lawmaker and their henchmen, but the police refused to record the case.
Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station, however, said none came to file any case in connection with the Wednesday’s incident at shipbreaking yards so far. He denied any pressure or influence on them from any quarter regarding the incident. ‘We have arrested two persons in the case filed in connection with the attack on journalists and efforts were on to nab the rest accused,’ he said adding that they would act accordingly if the owners filed case in connection with the encroachment.
Sirazuddola, owner of the Pakija Enterprise, accused the lawmaker of lying to journalists about his sons’ misdeeds. ‘Two sons of the lawmaker were present on the spot and led the encroachment,’ he said alleging that the police were taking no action regarding the incident due to political influence of the lawmaker.
Meanwhile, the police arrested Golam Mostofa and Shahabuddin, two aides of the lawmaker’s sons, from Kumira area under the upazila in the case filed in connection with the attack on journalists. The two sons Al Mamun and Al Noman, accompanied by more than 200 people, encroached on the yards of Pakija Enterprise, Prime Steel, Moslema Steel and Asadia Ship Cutting on Wednesday. They assaulted four journalists who went to cover the incident.
