6 injured in BCL internal clash at DU

Six students were injured in a clash between two rival groups Bangladesh Chhatra League, the students organisation of ruling Awami League, in the campus of Dhaka University on Tuesday. The rival groups are BCL units of Kabi Jashim Uddin Hall and Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, sources in the campus said.

Sources who witnessed the clash said Zahid from Zia Hall and Mintu from Jashim Uddin Hall picked up a brawl in the morning when Zahid beat up Mintu with the help of some of his friends. The clash soon spread between supporters of the two groups leaving six students injured, said Moudud Islam, a resident of Jashim Uddin Hall. The clash continued for about an hour until 12:45pm. The injured, identified as Jasim, Mintu, Salam, Monir and Ali of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall and Masud of Ziaur Rahman Hall, were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Witness said unruly supporters of the two groups showed off machetes, daggers and iron pipes while they were engaged in the clash which their senior leaders could not stop. Shahbag police, the university authorities and BCL university unit later rushed to the scene and controlled the situation. Sohel Rana Tipu, president of DU unit of BCL told reporters that they would investigate the matter and take measures against those responsible for the clash. Saiful Islam Khan, Dhaka University proctor said the university authorities would also form a probe body to investigate causes of such clash.
