Matin to face another graft case

A parliamentary body on Thursday asked the shipping ministry to sue former adviser of the caretaker government Maj Gen (rtd) MA Matin for extending the age limit of marine pilots of Chittagong Seaport “unlawfully”. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry in its meeting took the decision to file the case and also asked the ministry to send the matter to the Anti-Corruption Commission for further investigation.

Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton, chairman of the committee, disclosed it while briefing reporters at the Parliament Media Center. Liton said there is no scope for extending the retirement-age limit of a public servant without having approval of parliament or Cabinet Division. “This is against the service rules 1974,” he said.

But the ex-shipping adviser raised the age limit of marine pilots from 57 years to 60 by an executive order of his ministry without having approval from the parliament or the cabinet division, the lawmaker noted in recommending the punitive measure. Matin, a powerful functionary of the post-1/11 interim regime, was earlier sued in another corruption case.
