Both the complainant and investigation officer (IO) of the Bangabandhu murder case are eager to see the earliest execution of the killers of Bangabandhu and want the government to bring back the six absconding killers as quickly as possible to ensure their punishment.

Taposh calls verdict ‘best birthday gift’

Fazle Noor Taposh, son of slain Shekh Fazlul Haque Moni, said he received the ‘best birthday gift’ on Supreme Court confirming Thursday the death sentence of the killers of his father. ‘My parents could not celebrate my birthday on November 19, 1975. Today, I have got my best birthday gift,’ an emotional Taposh, who is also one of the lawyers of the state panel in Mujib murder case, told a press briefing.

Prepaid gas metre for Dhanmondi

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd will introduce prepaid gas metre for its residential consumers in the city's Dhamondi area. Initially, 5000 prepaid meters will be installed in Dhamondi area under a pilot project within next two years. After observing the success, other areas will be brought under the prepaid metering system.

Secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid yesterday said they respect the verdict in the Bangabanhdu murder case as they believe in the rule of law. "We're respectful to the verdict, as our party believes in the rule of law," he told reporters when they sought his comments on the verdict.

Attorney general gets death threat

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam received a letter threatening death yesterday afternoon a few hours after the announcement of the verdict in Bangabandhu murder case. He received the letter containing a piece of white cloth (alluding to a shroud) with a chit at his office around 3:30pm. In the chit, the writer threatened to kill Mahbubey Alam and other prosecution lawyers in the Bangabandhu murder case.

Nation has finally seen justice

Chief state counsel Anisul Haque said the nation has finally seen justice in the Bangabandhu murder case. "The court had received appeals from the convicts for hearing on five specific points and accepted prosecution's deliberations on each point and rejected the presentations of the defence counsels," he told a press briefing after the verdict yesterday.

Bishwa Ijtema to begin on January 21

The three-day 'Jor' Ijtema, an annual event of Tablig Jamaat will begin on the bank of the river Turag in Tongi today. The 'Jor Ijtema' is preparatory of Bishwa Ijtema will begin today and will end November 23 following a munajat. Ijtema organizers said about 60,000 devotees including some foreign devotees will attend the Jor Ijtema.

Rule of law triumphs over injustice: Amirul

Noted jurist barrister Amirul Islam on Thursday said at least the rule of law has triumphed over injustice and misrule after the long struggle for 34 years through the historic judgment given by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in the Bangabandhu murder case. "The judgment would bury the culture of impunity perpetrated by the forces of traitors in darkness," Amirul Islam said.

Verdict to be executed by early Jan: Qamrul

State Minister for Law Advocate Qamrul Islam said the Supreme Court verdict, endorsing the death sentence on ex-army officers in the Bangabandhu murder case, will be executed by the end of December or early January after completing entire legal process.

Sheikh Hasina chosen for Indira Gandhi Peace Prize

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been selected for the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development this year for her "outstanding contribution to the promotion of democracy and pluralism". This was decided by an international jury chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust said. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh and a citation, would be presented to her at a function to be held at a later date.
