Awami League leaders and supporters, defying party instruction, took to the streets on hearing the Supreme Court verdict on Thursday. AL backed lawyers were also seen chanting the slogan 'Jai Bangla Jai Bangabandhu' at the Supreme Court premises. Home minister Sahara Khatun has asked all party leaders and activists across the country to remain calm and not to stage any processions and rallies.

Defence will move for review: Mamun

Defence counsel barrister Abdullah Al Mamun has said a review petition will be filed on the rejection of the appeals. "We will submit the petition to the Appellate Division after receiving a certified copy of the verdict," said Mamun, who represented death convicts Bazlul Huda and AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, at a press conference.

The nation on Thursday hailed the verdict in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case. In his immediate reaction, chief counsel for the state in this case Anisul Huq told The Daily Star, "The nation has got the justice." Awami League Lawmaker Fazle Noor Taposh said, "Today is my birthday and this is the best gift for me."

The Supreme Court rejected appeals of five men convicted of killing Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in a landmark verdict Thursday. The five killers will go to the gallows, unless the president grants them clemency.The condemned men were not present in the courtroom when the Justice Mohammed Tofazzal Islam gave the historic judgement.

PM returns home from Italy

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned home on Thursday morning from Rome after a four-day official visit to Italy. She went to Italy on November 15 to attend the World Summit on Food Security-2009, arranged by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Revenue rises on money-whitening

Revenue earning from the construction sector increased sharply in the first three months of this fiscal year (FY) as whitening black money was allowed. But earning from a major sector -- power -- decreased due to a fall in power generation.
