The protracted murder trial

Following is the chronology of the protracted legal process of the murder trial of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, architect of independent Bangladesh, who was assassinated along with most of his family members on the fateful night of August 15, 1975. But none was allowed to file a case immediately after the assassination of the Bangabandhu.

Absconding convicts

The government is determined to bring back six absconding convicts sentenced to death in absentia in the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case. They are now hiding abroad to escape punishment. The six condemned convicts are: Lt Col Khandakar Abdur Rashid, Lt Col Shariful Huq Dalim, Lt Col S H M B Noor Chowdhury, Risaldar Moslemuddin Khan, Lt Col A.M. Rashed Chowdhury and Capt Abdul Majed. The government is considering various options to bring them back to Bangladesh to face punishment.

High alert in place; govt firm on checking sabotage

Bangladesh to grow golden rice by 2012

Bangladesh will grow genetically modified (GM) rice variety known as golden rice by 2012. The rice variety, rich in vitamin ‘A’, will help meet the deficiency of the particular vitamin, lack of which causes childhood blindness and weaken immune system. The Manila-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in an article posted on its web site on Tuesday said the golden rice would grow in Bangladesh and the Philippines by 2012.
