Letterman Shocks Viewers With Details Of $2 Million Sex Scandal-Blackmail Plot

David Letterman shocked his audience Thursday night with the revelation of an extortion plot against him. The "Late Show" host told a story involving how someone was threatening to reveal his sexual relations with staffers.

Letterman told his audience that he had to go downtown to testify before the grand jury and "tell them all of the creepy things that I've done."

The 62-year-old iconic comedian went on to give accounts of the extortion plot and how three weeks ago he received a package from someone that claimed to have detailed information about his sexual dalliances with staffers. The extortionist ultimately was demanding $2 million from the CBS funny man or else the information would be made public.

Letterman immediately went to his attorney and went to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, which conducted an investigation. With the help of Letterman and a bogus check authorities were able to make an arrest on Thursday.

RadarOnline.com is reporting suspect arrested is a Robert Halderman a producer for CBS's 48 Hours. Reportedly Halderman lived in Connecticut with a woman who previously was involved with Letterman.

A statement from the network said CBS was made aware of an ongoing police investigation involving David Letterman and an employee at '48 Hours,' who was subsequently arrested on charges of attempted grand larceny in the first degree.

CBS officials are reportedly cooperating with the authorities and the employee has been suspended pending the results of the investigation.

During Letterman's grand jury testimony about the blackmail attempt he revealed the nature of his relations with members of his staff. During his telecast Letterman told the audience that he had had sex with women who work on this show.

In his usual light hearted tone but clearly discussing the difficult subject he said that the situation had been potentially embarrassing if made public, especially for the women and that he had felt he needed to protect people, particularly his family and his job.

According to reports Halderman needed money and decided to target Letterman.
