Google Celebrates 'Zero Wing' Anniversary With Alien Theme

A cryptic theme logo for the popular Internet search engine Google had users all over the world wondering if extra terrestrial life had been discovered.

Google, which replaces its iconic and simple logo for themed variations celebrating birthdays, holidays and other milestones, posted a mysterious UFO.

The alien ship was "stealing" one of the letters from the logo, prompting a flurry of rumors and guesses into what event triggered the theme. Traditionally, when users click on the themed logo, they are taken to a search page revealing the anniversary.

But Google stumped users until it posted another strange message on its official Twitter account: "1.12.12 25.15.21.18 15 1.18.5 2.5.12.15.14.7 20.15 21.19"

The message was deciphered: "All your O are belong to us."

The line is a parody of a classic mistranslated Sega and PC game from 1989, 'Zero Wing.' A classic Internet meme for its poor grammar and over-the-top villain, the video game has enjoyed a shelf life far longer than the average side-scrolling shooter.

Now, it seems even Google is a fan, celebrating the game's 20th anniversary.
