Leaders of the main opposition have termed the one-year tenure of the Awami League-led grand alliance government as a total failure.
BNP is making a list of its leaders and activists 'persecuted by trumped-up charges' across the country during the one year of the Awami League-led government. "The Awami League has established a reign of terror across the country by oppressing and filing false lawsuit against opposition leaders and workers," BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain told a news conference at National Press Club on Sunday.
The Awami League-led government is yet to take any effective measures for administrative reforms which the ruling party pledged before the December 2008 polls. The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on several occasions expressed her annoyance at the sluggishness in bureaucracy and ordered steps to speed up administrative functioning for smooth service delivery. But nothing has been done yet in keeping with the directives nine months inside the incumbent government, according to officials concerned.
Ninety-seven people have so far been killed in ‘crossfire’ or ‘encounter’ by law enforcers since January 6, when the Awami League-led government assumed office, as such extrajudicial killing goes unabated with the government’s deviation from its pledges to stop such practice. One thousand, one hundred and forty-two people have so far been killed in extrajudicial incidents since June 24, 2004, when the Rapid Action Battalion began its journey with killing people in the name of ‘crossfire.’
The Awami League-led government, now eight months in office, is yet to pull its socks up in taking wealth statements of the ‘powerful people’ in line with one of the ruling party’s priority electoral pledges to fight corruption.
The main opposition BNP remained absent on Thursday as the first budget of the Awami League-led government was announced in parliament.
