BNP marks 'Black Day', demands punishment for 1/11 players

BNP has demanded punishment of the perpetrators of the January 11, 2007 "takeover", when the country entered into a two-year long state of emergency. Secretary general of the main opposition BNP, Khandakar Delwar Hossain, at a discussion on Monday marking what the party termed a 'Black Day' for the nation, said: "Not just the main players, we also demand punishment of those who have been identified as the collaborators of that regime."

BNP to observe 1/11 as black day

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday announced programmes to observe January 11 as a Black Day and January 25 as Democracy Burial Day. The party also took 7-day programmes to celebrate January 19, which is the 74th birth anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in a befitting manner.

Opposition BNP will observe January 11 as 'Black Day' as they lamented continuity of the Constitution and democracy were disrupted through the promulgation of the rule of emergency this day in 2007 by the then President being intimidated at gunpoint by some highly ambitious military officials. The party, which lost its streak in power following the 1/11 changeover, also decided to observe January 25 as 'Democracy Killing Day'.

DU black day observed: Fresh probe into August unrest demanded

Dhaka University teachers and students have become sharply divided over observance of 'black day' marking August 20-22 incident in 2007. Students claimed that the teachers are observing the day ignoring their demand as the incident took place between students and Army on August 20, which should be treated as 'black day.'
