Daily Amar Desh editor gets bail in defamation case

Bangla daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman has secured bail in a defamation suit filed by Tawfik-e-Elahi Chowdhury. Dhaka metropolitan magistrate SK Tofail Hasan gave the bail order on Tuesday after Rahman surrendered before the court and sought bail. With this, Rahman has secured bail in all the cases filed against him so far, his lawyers said.

SQ Chy asked to surrender within 8 weeks

The High Court (HC) on Monday directed BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury to surrender before the trail court within eight-week in connection with a defamation case filed in Khulna. The HC direction came as Salahuddin appeared before the HC for bail in the case. The court also directed the government not to harass Salahuddin during the eight-week period. The higher court also asked the trial court to consider his bail prayer after his surrender.

A Dhaka court on Tuesday dismissed a defamation case brought against home minister Sahara Khatun by BNP lawmaker Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury. Earlier on the day, Chowdhury sued Sahara with Dhaka's Executive Magistrate's Court for calling him Razakar (war criminal).

The High Court on Tuesday directed the government not to harass Amar Desh Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman till January 3 next year in connection with a defamation case filed in Magura. A vacation bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam fixed January 3 for hearing the bail petition filed by Mahmudur at the regular bench of the HC.

Arrest warrant against journos to go

The cabinet on Monday approved the Court of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill-2009, scraping the provision for courts to issue arrest warrants against editors, publishers, reporters or writers in connection with any defamation case. However, only summon could be issued against them if their published news libelled anyone.

SQ Chy gets bail in defamation case

The High Court on Wednesday granted an anticipatory bail for six months to BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury in a defamation case filed in Panchagarh. An HC bench of Justice AFM Abdur Rahman and Justice Emdadul Haque Azad also issued a rule upon the government to explain within four weeks why SQ Chowdhury should not be granted regular bail in this case. The court passed the order upon a bail petition filed by SQ Chowdhury. He appeared before the HC bench for bail today.

Court summons Amar Desh editor, 3 others

A Dhaka Court on Wednesday issued summons upon the acting editor, publisher, chief reporter and a reporter of the daily Amar Desh asking them to appear before it on November 30 in a defamation case filed by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
