475 crore earned in Tourism sector in 2009: Quader

Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Ghulam Mohammad Quader told the House today that Taka 475.90 crore was earned nationally from the tourism sector till October last year. "The income from the sector in 2007 and 2008 was Taka 526.51 crore and Taka 612.45 crore respectively," he said while replying to a scripted question from treasury bench member Waresat Hossain Belal.

The government, in order to tackle the global recession, is planning to provide incentive of one taka for every dollar earned by exporters and by expatriate Bangladeshi workers who send home remittances, said official sources.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines earned a net profit of Tk 5.91 crore for the period ended June 30, 2008 since July 23, 2007, the day the national flag carrier was turned into a public limited company.
