HC asks govt to stop river encroachment in 7 days

The High Court on Thursday asked the authorities to visit the Burganga and Turag rivers and stop all kinds of encroachment and dirt-filling in the rivers at Mirpur and Hazaribagh. The High Court bench of Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Quamrul Islam Siddiqui also asked the Dhaka metropolitan police commissioner, Dhaka deputy commissioner, director general of the environment department and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority chairman to submit a report in this regard to the Supreme Court registrar in seven days after the visit.

Govt to take steps to remove waterlogging: PM

Prime Minister Hasina Sheikh said the government will take all necessary measures to remove waterlogging in the capital. She said this while inaugurating water reserve plant construction project jointly taken by Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) and Bangladesh Air Force to remove rainwater in Tejgaon and old airport areas.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed Dhaka City Corporation, WASA and all other authorities concerned to immediately take effective steps to salvage the capital from water logging during rainy season, as many parts of the city were deluged following torrential overnight rain.
