V-Day celebration renews hope for war crime trial

The nation celebrated the 38th anniversary of its glorious victory over Pakistani occupation forces on Wednesday amid renewed calls for immediate trial of the war criminals. The day, back in 1971, the country achieved its independence as well as a name, Bangladesh, as an individual nation after nine-month-long Liberation War.

President places wreath at National Memorial in Savar

President Zillur Rahman on Wednesday morning paid rich tributes to the martyred of the country's War of Independence by placing wreaths at the National Memorial here marking the Victory Day. The president placed the wreaths at the altar of the National Memorial at 7:35am.

Law State Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam said that the government is determined to put war criminals behind the bar and their trial will be finished before upcoming victory day on December 16, 2009.

Photography exhibition in Mymensingh

AL, BNP clash over V-Day celebration in Bagerhat, 7 hurt

At least seven people were injured in a clash between supporters of the Awami League (AL) and the BNP at Arpara village in Sadar Upazila this morning.

Police and witnesses said the clash began at about 11am following an altercation over the Victory Day celebration at the village.

Holding the spirit of the Liberation War, people across the country gathered at various monuments to pay tributes to the national heroes amid calls for trial of the war criminals and voting them out in the national polls.

Streets were flooded with the enthusiastic people carrying banners of different political, social, cultural and professional organisations, and singing patriotic songs.

The nation celebrated the 37th anniversary of liberation saluting the valiant sons and daughters of the soil who made supreme sacrifices for the independence in 1971 with a dream of building a modern democratic state.

A four-day celebration by Liberation War Museum (LWM) on our Victory day started on December 13 at the museum premises with a demand to include the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the curriculum of schools, colleges and Madrassas.
