The government has allocated Tk 30 lakh, 300 tonnes of rice and 500 bundles of CI sheet for the people affected in the recent violence in Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts. State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku on Wednesday made the announcement while visiting the affected areas in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati, reports our Khagrachhari correspondent.

Prices of fine grade rice and some spices increased sharply in the week as, market sources said, hoarders and importers have tightened the supply of the commodities. Chicken prices also increased in the week and lentil prices declined as the early local harvest of red lentil is set to be available on the market in about two weeks.

Open Market Sales (OMS) of rice at Tk 22 a kilogram started in Dhaka on Wednesday. Dealers in a total of 40 trucks began the OMS, which is expected to start in full swing through 700 dealers from Friday in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Narsingdi and Gazipur, said an official of the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management.

Poor and marginal farmers and sharecroppers keep facing trouble as they need to buy rice for higher prices after having sold the rice they would produce for low prices at the time of harvest. Market source said farmers were buying boro for prices between Tk 540 and Tk 600 a maund (37.3kg) but they sold it for prices between Tk 400 and Tk 430 soon after harvest. Most of the poor and marginal farmers said they were forced to sell their produces for prices lower than their production cost to meet their needs and repay loans they had taken before harvest in May.
