The Election Commission on Sunday wrote to three Islamic political parties, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, for further amendments to their respective constitutions as it found their charters in conflict with the country’s constitution. The two other parties are Bangladesh Khelataf Andolan and Tarikat Federation. The Election Commission also sent letters to six other political parties asking them to make further amendments to their constitutions which, it said, had provisions in conflict with the Representation of the People Order.

Finance AMA Muhith yesterday said the country's political parties had abused power taking advantage of the liberal democratic process, playing a part in slowing down everything - be it establishing the local authorities or boosting overall development. "They would forget the huge mandate given by the people in the elections and like to enjoy power after being elected," he told reporters, after addressing a workshop at the conference room of Policy Research Institute (PRI) in the capital.

US Ambassador James Moriarty has said Bangladesh is an impressively vibrant democracy but it has to be made stronger and the country needs to insist on dialogue among political parties. "The best legislature is a place where government policy is examined and debated," he said in an interview with Dhaka Courier published on Friday. Moriarty's remarks coincide with the opposition BNP's continued abstention from parliament making it into a one-man show.

The Election Commission on Thursday wrote to three political parties, including the ruling Awami League, asking for further amendments to their respective constitutions which, it said, had provisions in conflict with the Representation of the People Order. The two other political parties which have been asked to amend their constitutions in line with the RPO provisions are Liberal Democratic Party and Jatiya Party (JP-Manju).
