Right to Development - Rural and yet upwardly mobile

Like many poor village women in Asia, Rukhsana Monir does not own a car, a television, or even a radio. But what she does have, like an increasing number of her sisters in rural Bangladesh, is a mobile phone. This report highlights a unique and innovative project, undertaken by the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, to improve both the income and connectivity of rural women.

মায়েদের জন্য ভালোবাসা - মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল

বহু বছর আগে আমি যখন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে ছিলাম তখন আমার ছেলেমেয়েরা খুব ছোট। তারা তাদের স্কুলটাকে খুব পছন্দ করত। তার কারণ সেখানে লেখাপড়া ছাড়া আরও অনেক কিছু হতো। যে রকম মে মাস এলেই স্কুলের সব বাচ্চা খুব উৎসাহ নিয়ে তাদের মায়েদের জন্য কোনো একটা উপহার তৈরি করা শুরু করত। মে মাসের ১১ তারিখ ‘মা দিবস’। সেদিন বাচ্চারা রীতিমতো হইচই করে মায়ের হাতে সেটা তুলে দিত! (বাবা দিবস মনে হয় ষড়যন্ত্র করে জুন মাসে রাখা হয়েছে−তত দিনে স্কুল ছুটি হয়ে যায় বাবার জন্য আর উপহার তৈরি হয় না!)

Int’l Women’s Day today

International Women’s Day will be observed today across the country as elsewhere in the world with pledges to uphold women’s rights. This year’s theme is ‘Investing in women and girls.’

Various women’s and socio-cultural organisations, and government and non-governmental agencies have chalked up elaborate programmes, including meetings, rallies and discussions, to mark the day.
