AL men ransack Barisal BNP office, set it afire

Ruling party men allegedly vandalised and set fire to Barisal BNP office complex on the city's Aswini Kumar Hall premises yesterday protesting the bomb blast near the Awami League (AL) office in Dhaka that left four people wounded. Witnesses said a group of Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men led by district unit Jubo League President Zakir Hossain and BCL city unit convener Ziaur Rahman swooped on the BNP office at about 6:00pm.

BNP men asked to tackle possible obstacle to council

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has asked party leaders to devise an effective strategy to deal with possible obstacles from local administration to hold district unit councils. She also directed party leaders to resolve internal disputes quickly to hold the national council on December 8 after a long gap of 16 years.

Khaleda blasts burning of books on Zia

The BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on Thursday said the name of Ziaur Rahman could not be erased from the minds of the people by burning books written on him. Blasting the incident of setting books on Ziaur Rahman on fire at Sonargaon museum, Khaleda said the country's independence and sovereignty was restored through the uprising of mass people and soldiers on November 7, 1975.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary-general, Khandaker Delwar, alleged that the Awami League, not BNP, pursues the politics of killing freedom-fighters and opposition leaders. He said that the Awami League is attempting to commemorate November 7 as 'freedom-fighter killing day' to rob it of its real significance and thus make it meaningless.
