Jail Killing Day today

Jail Killing Day, commemorating the assassinations of four national leaders inside the Dhaka Central Jail 34 years ago, will be observed across the country today. The four Liberation War heroes - acting president of the Bangladesh government in exile in 1971 Syed Nazrul Islam, its prime minister Tajuddin Ahmed, finance minister M Mansur Ali, and home, relief and rehabilitation minister AHM Qamaruzzaman - were gunned down on this day in 1975.

BNP to go for movement after Dec 8 council

Opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque said yesterday that his party, BNP would launch movement in protest against oppression and suppression of the present government after holding its national council on December 8.

Stop backing killers: PM

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina renewed her assault on the opposition on Monday, telling them to stop supporting "bomb attackers and killers". "I urge the opposition parties to refrain from such heinous activities," Hasina said in parliament as MPs discussed a censure motion on the Oct 21 bomb attack on Awami League MP Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

BNP talks political situation with foreign diplomats

BNP, the main opposition in parliament, yesterday briefed foreign diplomats and donor agency representatives about the country's latest political situation, and its preparation for holding its national council in December this year. The party is planning to invite foreign guests including prominent global personalities as observers to its national council that will be held in the capital, according to party leaders.

Opposition cares little about the poor: PM

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina sniped at the opposition saying they cared little for the poor people during a parliamentary discussion on poverty reduction strategies on Sunday. Hasina termed the absence of the main opposition BNP 'unfortunate' and said, "They don't have the urge to do something good of poor people. So they did not join.

If politicians are protected then we do not need Anti-Corruption Commission

US Ambassador to Bangladesh James F Moriarty has said the other day that his country wants to see the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) work independently remaining free from any control. Earlier he had a meeting with ACC Chairman Ghulam Rahman at his office. The US envoy told a questioner, it will not be good for the people, if such amendment of the law restricting the powers of the ACC is brought.

JS boycott may lead to confrontational politics

The marginalised opposition BNP has finally decided to stay away from the parliament accusing the government of vitiating the atmosphere inside and outside the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) through autocratic behaviour. BNP alleged that the government and the ruling party were trying to unleash a 'reign of terror' on the opposition and the people.

BNP advisers feel ignored in party reorganisation

The 18-member Advisory Council for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is yet to be engaged in the party's reorganisation process creating a sense of isolation among a large section of party leaders. BNP is set to hold a national council to elect its leaders at different levels on December 8 but party Chief Khaleda Zia has not formally discussed the matter with the Advisory Council members.
