Merchant banks suspend GP margin loan facility

Merchant bankers suspended Wednesday the margin loan facility against Grameenphone shares with effect from today (Thursday) as its price-earning (PE) ratio crossed 50. The decision came at a meeting of the Bangladesh Merchant Bankers Association (BMBA).

Grameenphone shares continued to drive the index at the Dhaka Stock Exchange on Wednesday when price of the largest listed issue shot up with huge transaction. The DSE index rose to a new high at Wednesday’s closing, crossing 5800-point mark when prices of GP shares increased by 7.38 per cent to reach Tk 387 from Tuesday’s closing of Tk 360, reported Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.

115,000 BO accounts opened in January

More than 115,000 Beneficiary Owners (BO) accounts were opened in January by the investors, which is a record figure in a normal situation of the market, Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) said. The CDBL said more than 200,000 BO accounts were opened in the month when the Grameenphone went public.

Dhaka stocks dropped on Wednesday after the Securities and Exchange Commission lowered again the maximum rate of margin loan for merchant banks and brokerage houses to 1:1 from 1:1.5 effective from Sunday, market operators said. The general index of Dhaka Stock Exchange lost 103.73 points, or 1.88 per cent, to close at 5,399.65. A DSE stockbroker said profit taking selling also contributed to Wednesday’s fall.

The Dhaka Stock Exchange continued its upward rally with the general price index crossing the 5,500-point mark on Tuesday despite the stock regulator’s move to curtail margin loan facilities. The DSE index ended at over 52 points or around one per cent higher at 5,503.37 on the day’s close due to a strong rally of mainly banking issues. The turnover on Tuesday created a new record, reaching a new high of Tk 1,690.99 crore over Monday’s Tk 1,689 crore.

Dhaka stocks lost nearly two percent yesterday, the opening day of the week, amid selling pressure from retail investors, who needed cash before the year ends.
