India yesterday offered assistance for Bangladesh's power sector that includes plans to build coal-fired power plants in Chittagong and Khulna. The offer was made during the first meeting of the Joint Steering Committee for Cooperation in the Power Sector in New Delhi yesterday. It was agreed that construction of the power plants would be undertaken as a joint venture with Bangladesh Power Development Board.

A total of 1,360 megawatts power would be added to the national grid in next three months, said the chairman of a parliamentary standing committee on Thursday. Maj Gen (retd) Shubid Ali Bhuiyan, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on energy, oil and mineral resources ministry, said 960 MW would be added to national grid by January next and 400 MW by March.

The government will float tenders in 2010 to add 4,000-4,500 megawatts to the overstrained national grid, finance minister said on Tuesday. Preparations for inviting bids are already complete, AMA Muhith told reporters after a meeting with delegates of the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) at the Economic Relations Division.
