British diplomats were alerted about a 15-year-old British girl who was promised a holiday but on arrival in Sylhet, Bangladesh hidden with relatives pending a forced marriage. When officials from the British High Commission in Dhaka traced her she denied that her family were keeping her against her will. However, further investigations highlighted that her family was beating and threatening her.

The fight against forced marriage

Last week, British diplomats sped to a village near Mirpur in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. The Foreign Office in the UK had been tipped off that a young British girl was being held prisoner by her father. He was beating her to get her to agree to a marriage she did not want, to a man she had never met. She was just fifteen years old.

Political parties urged to incorporate women issues in polls manifestos

Women activists of the political parties and social and professional organisations on Saturday called on the political parties to incorporate the issue of women’s empowerment in the election manifestos on priority basis.

At an exchange of views at Narigrantha Prabartana, they also demanded thirty per cent nominations for women leaders to contest in the upcoming general elections.

Eve teasing - a social offence

But as per foreign service rules a diplomat is not allowed to marry a foreigner as there is a risk of state secret being leaked out.
