Fazle Hasan Abed receives Rockefeller award

Brac founder and Chairperson Fazle Hasan Abed received this year's David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award in New York on Tuesday in recognition of his contribution to eradicating poverty and fighting social injustice.

He was honoured at an annual event titled 'University for a Night' at Lincoln Centre, attended by distinguished faculty and experts with diverse backgrounds and interests from around the world, reports News World. Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan also received the award for her contribution to social service.

Sheikh Hasina chosen for Indira Gandhi Peace Prize

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been selected for the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development this year for her "outstanding contribution to the promotion of democracy and pluralism". This was decided by an international jury chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust said. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh and a citation, would be presented to her at a function to be held at a later date.

Moon sighted, Eid-ul-Azha on Nov 28

The holy Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on November 28 as the moon of Zilhajj month of Hijri 1430 was sighted in the country today. The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee in the conference room of the Islamic Foundation here.

Duty-free cars to MPs aims at saving public money: Hamid

Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid Chowdhury yesterday said that his latest proposal to allow the lawmakers to import vehicles on duty free basis was made with a view to saving public money. Talking to The Independent at his office yesterday, the Speaker said that though a proposal was made earlier to provide vehicles to the lawmakers, he has come to the conclusion after detailed study of various options that it would cost public exchequer more money than allowing the lawmakers to import duty free vehicles.

Authorities blame donors' reluctance for Aila victims

The Disaster Management Bureau on Saturday lamented that the donors were not coming up to assist the government in repairing the embankments damaged in the cyclone Aila, which is still forcing around 2 lakh people to live on the embankments in the coastal districts. "Several months after the Aila, around 2 lakh people are homeless. They cannot return home, as water still enters their homes through damaged embankments.

PM vows to reduce child, maternal mortality rates

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday promised to reduce child and maternal mortality rates in the country through community health clinics across the country. Hasina made the pledge while talking to a number of patients receiving treatment in a free eye-camp in Kotalipara of Gopalganj district through videoconferencing from her official residence Jamuna in the afternoon. The Prime Minister also reviewed health services in the Chittagong division through the videoconferencing.
