Govt orders 'cellphone gun' alert

The government yesterday asked the local administrators-Divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners (DCs) and the upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) to create public awareness about 'Mobile Gun', a swanky lethal weapons. The directive was given to the field-level officials at a meeting with the divisional commissioners held at the cabinet division with the cabinet secretary M Abdul Aziz in the chair.

A mobile gun in a device which looks like a mobile phone but it actually in a gun from which miniature bullets can be fired. Government apprehends that a large amount of 'mobile gun' have been supplied to the members of different militant organisations-Jamaatul Mujahideen, Bangladesh (JMB), Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Harkat-ul jihad, Laskar-e-Taiyeba and other terrorist groups.

When contacted a divisional commissioner, told The Independent on condition of anonymity that the cabinet secretary also instructed them to stop any kind of militant activities from their respective areas at any cost. "We have also been asked to start awareness campaign about 'mobile gun," he said. He also said that they had discussed various problems including law and order, functions of the field-level officials and land related issues at the meeting. The divisional commissioners also met with secretaries of establishment, home and the land ministries for resolving related issues.

Meeting sources said that the Cabinet Secretary asked the divisional commissioners to implement the government directives properly and in time and take steps for procurement of Boro rice as per government target for increasing stock of foodgrains. Sources at the home ministry said that the home secretary would ask the divisional commissioners for taking necessary measures for coordination among police and members of other law enforcing agencies to maintain law and order before the elections.
