Govt orders 'cellphone gun' alert

The government yesterday asked the local administrators-Divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners (DCs) and the upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) to create public awareness about 'Mobile Gun', a swanky lethal weapons. The directive was given to the field-level officials at a meeting with the divisional commissioners held at the cabinet division with the cabinet secretary M Abdul Aziz in the chair.

Grameenphone's record initial public offering ended Sunday for non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) investors, with total subscription over three times the issue target. Though the subscription closed on Oct 8 for locals, NRBs could submit their applications until Sunday (Oct 18).

A director with the French news agency Agence France Presse (AFP) said Friday that Internet piracy was a major threat to world's media. "I think a major challenge for the media is how to deal with the Internet, which provides a lot of opportunities and also a lot of dangers," said Eric McDonald Wishart, AFP's Asia-Pacific director who is here to attend the World Media Summit.

GP launches edn info service

Grameenphone has launched a new value-added service yesterday that would provide callers education-related information over the phone. The service, Studyline, would be accessible from any GP connection by dialling 2255. It would offer admission information on local schools, colleges and universities along with admission procedures of renowned universities of the world, according to a statement by the company.

30,000 land phones in city out of order

About 30 thousand land phone lines under Maghbazar exchange went out of order from 3.30pm yesterday due to technical fault, according to sources. Prime minister's Jamuna residence and cabinet members' houses on Minto Road apart from other houses were affected in the glitch.

Country’s cell phone users hit 5 crore

The total number of mobile phone users in impoverished Bangladesh has hit 50 million (5 crore), making it one of the fastest growing telecom markets in the region, officials said Thursday. The country’s telecoms regulator said mobile phone subscribers crossed 50.4 million at the end of September, meaning more than one in three people in one of the poorest countries in the world has a cell phone.
